* The final mark for each assignment has been broken down into specific criteria. The best way to help your child would be to take the criteria that he/she needs the most help in and focus on that.
Below are some general ideas for regular practice
Reading
Ideas for general reading practice: In reading, students are expected to not only show basic comprehension of a text but to also show a deeper form of thinking in the form of finding the main idea and supporting it, making connections, predictions with reasoning, etc. One way to help your child at home would be to have your child read at home and have conversations about the text such as: - What do you think will happen next? Then, have your child reason why this is a solid prediction (perhaps this author always plays situations out in a certain way, perhaps knowing that its a trilogy it is likely the main character will survive, perhaps its the most logical solution to the problem, maybe this prediction is based on previous events in the book, etc.) - What does this situation remind you of? Try to think of text-text or text-world connections that are based on a theme or a characteristic. A connection where the main character is running and this makes you think of when you run is not a solid connection. However, perhaps the character is running to raise awareness for cancer which makes you think of when you ask your family to donate money for Jump Rope for Heart every year. Raising awareness for special causes would be a good connection. - What can you infer (conclude) from this information? Then, have your child give reasons from the text to support their conclusion. - What is your favourite genre and why (discussion on features of that type of genre) - similarities and differences between the book read and another book (e.g. authors' styles, themes, type of text, etc.) - What is the theme of the book. How do you know? - What are your personal strengths and weaknesses in reading? What goal can you come up with? What is your plan of action to obtain that goal? *All of these questions relate to something being taught in the class * If you simply want your child to read more each day, it doesn't always have to be chapter books. It can be French comic books too. |
Websites to check out
1jour1actu I use this website often in my class. It has current events that are happening in the world and the level of text is great for junior/intermediate (depending on the subject) There are also french listening activities. www.1jour1actu.com/ Tumblebooks (French or English Reading) - This website allows you to listen to different books. The subtitles are there so that your child can read while listening. http://www.tumblebooks.com/ Dance Mat Typing - - In junior grades and above we spend alot of time using technology, especially computers. Students are continually researching, typing up their writing pieces, sharing ideas on One Note, etc. - This website will help improve typing skills to help eliminate time spent and frustration from typing. Have your child practice placing their hands/fingers appropriate on the keyboard. http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/ |
