Speaking/Listening
There are 2 parts to assess: Speaking and Listening Speaking Students are expected to speak in French only during the half day in their French class as well as comprehend French instructions. In addition to this, students are expected to:
Listening Listening needs to be active. It is assessed by a student's comprehension of an oral text (e.g. discussion in the classroom, story told to them, idea shared by another person, etc.). In order to show active listening students are expected to:
Students are given many opportunities in the classroom to speak with an elbow partner, in a group, and in front of the class. Students will continue to do some oral presentations throughout the year with the success criteria listed above as the main criteria. |
Reading
Students will have the opportunity to read both fiction and non-fiction texts. Reading can be difficult and less motivating than any other subject for most students. It is important that you support reading at home by setting aside time to read and having discussions with your child. See "What you can do at home". It is important that your child use the tools provided (i.e. reading strategies, anchor charts on walls, dictionaries, references in personal notebooks, example level 3's and 4's provided to them) to help him/her improve reading skills, especially as these were created for and by the students. This term,students will be reading non-fiction texts and will be assessed with specific questions about the text. The questions will test their ability to:

Writing
When writing, it is important that students use the resources provided (in their writing journals, on anchor charts on the walls, on notes under each writing stage) as these were created for and by the students. Also, these resources are meant to support students in order to achieve success Writing assessments will be integrated with Social Studies and sometimes Science Students will: 1. Organize ideas for their writing (can use a graphic organizer (Knowledge and Understanding) 2. Revising and editing work to improve content (using feedback) (Thinking) 3. My vocabulary is appropriate for the subject and my sentences make sense (Communication) 4. Use appropriate punctuation (periods, capitals, commas, question marks) and correct spelling/conjugation of words (Communication) 5. Relate supporting ideas to the main idea (Application) |
